The POE factor

Your life is interaction with world in three ways:-
You Observe the world with 5 senses,
You Perceive the world,
You Express yourself in the world.

The Observation, Perception and Expression decide how successful you will be in the world.

And the same faculties in others can help you understand them better. When someone doesn't notice your help or love, you can say, "oh poor in observation." When someone doesn't understand what you are telling them, "oh he/she needs to improve Perception." And when someone is not speaking well or enough to you, you can say, "oh, he/she needs to improve on expression."

You need detailed, minute and diversified Observation; clear and communal Perception and natural and authentic Expression. Regular practise of Sudarshan Kriya and Meditation enhances your POE factor. :)

When you leave a comment, I know that you have observed my post, perceived something out of it, and I am glad you expressed! :)

Life and afterlife of a research scholar

Over the past five years, I have confronted these three questions at least a thousand times, when I tell someone that I am doing research for PhD: So how is it going on, when it will get over, and what you will do after that!?
The expressions behind the questions are often varied from simple curiosity to total surprise, from personal concern to "oh my God, what is he doing"!
To enlighten all on this peculiar type of living, here are some answers.
First, the research scholars are not near to extinction, fighting for survival species. We get good stipend and accommodation, food and other facilities that any softy guy would envy... Plus we have flexible timings and we don't travel 1 hour to the office! So chill, being a research scholar is a cool life.

Second, as to when it will get complete, I will let you know when it is done. Dont worry, everything that has a beginning has an end.

Third, what after PhD.
Again, I hope those with PhD do survive in this world, else it would be height of educated unemployment!
Nevertheless, thanks for all your concern.
Here is what I might do after PhD:

  1. Go on a vacation for two months
  2. Go for a post doc... yes, research has no end
  3. Go learn guitar and piano and dances
  4. Scuba diving in Goa
  5. Skydiving
  6. Join an Animation course and produce high quality 3D movies
  7. Become a Journalist and tell real tales: Join SSCMS!?
  8. Join SSRVM and open up schools that really educate kids not make them muggers
  9. Organise an Utsav
  10. Become YES!+ teacher
  11. Teach in BSc and MSc Physics at any place in the world
  12. Open a Satvik Ayurvedic restaurant
  13. Become an Ayurvedic Doctor
  14. Write books on Physics
  15. Do an MBA
  16. Learn java and become a softy.
  17. Go on a world tour, the hitchhikers way.
  18. Become an astronaut and go to moon
  19. Take a lift from some spaceship and go hitchhike in the galaxy
  20. All of above
  21. None of above

Happy Onam to all!

Onam celebrates the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. Celebrated with great joy in Kerala and other parts of South India, this is a festival filled with elaborate feasts, folk songs, elegant dances, energetic games, elephants, boats and flowers! www.onamfestival.org is an excellent website for the information on this festival.

The Legend goes that the King Mahabali ruled wisely and judiciously, and all the people in his kingdom were happy and prosperous. The King's popularity continued to go endlessly and it also gave him lot power and a big ego. The Gods requested the Lord Vishnu to control the King's power. The Lord Vishnu took form of a Brahmin boy and appeared in front of the King. He asked the King of a donation, and the generous King said ask whatever you want, I will give it. The Boy asked for the land that can be covered in his three Footsteps. The King agreed. The boy suddenly started becoming huge in size and covered the whole sky with one foot, the whole earth with another, and asked the King where he should keep the third footstep. The King recognized that the boy was the Divine himself, and said that please keep your third foot on my head. Lord Vishnu did so, and pushed the King to the nether world. The Lord was compassionate to the King and offered him a boon for all his good qualities. The King with all his love for his people, asked the boon to visit them once a year. The day of the Onam is the homecoming of the beloved King for the people to their homes. They rejoice and celebrate his return in this festival.

Our mythology is so nice. The King symbolizes the Ego, which when grown too much, can cause harm to oneself and others. The Lord Vishnu is the maintainer of the Universe, or the Energy within us that maintains a balance for existence and proper living. The Brahmin boy symbolises the knowledge of life. The knowledge of life shows us that life alone encompasses all realms, and then the Ego humbly bows down. Uncovered by the Ego, we would love to go and meet people, which is what the homecoming of the King symbolises! And devoid of Ego, the celebration is spontaneous!

Also, if we look at the timings of the Festivals in India, we will notice that the work and celebration is put together by wise men in this country. This is the harvesting time, and for a country with huge farmland and large population of farmers, this is a time of great hardwork. The wise sages have given the celebration to go hand in hand by choosing this time for Onam!
Don't forget to check out www.onamfestival.org for the amazing details, fun games and things related to Onam!

Work in Celebration! Celebrate your work!

One hour day and Half hour night

I always feel grateful for being in a Research Institute. Its this sheer opportunity to meet some of the most brilliant people on the planet. Today we had a talk by the Astronaut Claude Nicollier, "My experience in Space".He showed some amazing pictures of the earth from space, it was simply fantastic to see the entire Himalayas in one picture. Also, the distribution of river Ganga where it meets the ocean.
It was also an absolutely stunning picture to see that on top of one of the desserts, the cloud coverage is exactly on top of the sea, and it ends on the coastline.

Absolutely passionate about his work, he mentioned how he had undergone rigorous training in water chambers. Their first mission was repair of the Hubble Space Telescope. Imagine changing parts of a huge (2 meter diameter) telescope in space! In those water chambers, they make exact replica, with high fidelity modelling, of the space telescope. In space you need to stabilize your body, and move very slowly. They practised it for months before the mission, in the water chambers. Exact and detailed planning, even practise of handling unexpected failures and problems.

When you are in space, you are in a very low air pressure surrounding. Say 1/3rd of that on earth. So the nitrogen tends to get into the blood. There are Air Chambers, where you increase the air pressure to normal ones on the earth, and rejuvenate yourself. Claustrophobia is the fear of enclosed spaces. If you have it, then these small Air chambers are not meant for you! Also the Astronaut's suit can be very cumbersome to get into and carry along.

You can see here a photo of a pair of astronauts repairing the Hubble Space Telescope. Notice that one astronaut has firmly grounded his feet on the robot arm of the space ship,(you don't see the spaceship, the arm is the white rod like thing in the photo), and other Astronaut is freely floating. Whenever the Astronauts are doing such work, doing space walk, they are attached to the space-craft by a thread: they are tethered. This is to ensure that they don't just get lost in space by mistake! As he jokingly said, if an astronaut or a repair tool is lost, it becomes a useless satellite to Earth! So all the repair tools and parts are also tethered to the spaceship.

As you are orbiting, you have sunrise and sunset more often! You get 1 hour of a day and 1/2 hour of a night! Of course, you don't go to sleep in that night when you are in shadow of the earth. So you need to get used to this kind of bright and dark timings. Before the Earth becomes totally dark, and Sun goes behind it, you can see a beautiful cresent of the Earth! The moon also rises and sets quite fast. The sky is absolutely dark, and you can see Sun also as just another, closer, brighter and bigger star.

On Earth, our body has mechanisms to push lot of blood supply to the head. So much supply is not needed when you are in space. Lot of body fluid imbalance and loss of orientation can happen when you just reach the space. So if you are planning to visit and go for a space ride, be prepared for some phisiological unpleasantness! He said its like sea-sickness.

To become an astronaut, he said, you need good physical fitness, sound mental balance, and a sound educational background. After that, its a luck to be selected, as there is lot of competition and few jobs available!

A Physics Graduate, who did research in Astronomy, and took over Air Pilot job, and then worked as an Astronaut, Claude Nicollier is now full time professor in Lausanne, inspiring young students to the thrill of Space research.

Green Code

It was memorable event in the history of Lalbagh. People who had come to Lalbagh on the event day wondered on seeing things happened around them. The Lalbagh garden trees and plants were singing and dancing with full of joy. By hearing the songs of the trees, the gushing air added their musical tunes to the songs! Visitors were mesmerised on seeing this Jugalbandhi. Inanimate vintage cars wanted to jump on the bandwagon.

They gathered together and started giving different poses to the photgraphers! AOL leaders/Volunteers have made a difference to the lives of Lalbagh this time. This intoxication will remain forever.

The cleaning drive witnessed thousands of people coming together and participating in the noble cause. After seeing the Jugalbandhi performance, people had gathered to see the painting exhibition by the Green code participants.

The paintings had come alive and it looked as if the trees of Lalbagh were smiling at the visitors. This celebration has spread like wildfire and now Cubbon park wants to have similar celebration. Lets get together and make this a great event!!

Prof. M. Prakash

It was first week of first year in the college, a post lunch class and a boring lecture going on. Suddenly one nice young and matured person in jeans and t-shirt walked in and took permission from the teacher to tell us a few things. He went to the board and drew a triangle and two vertices of the triangle, drew a perpendicular to the next side. then he said, that if I draw the third one also, they will all pass through this common point!

It was quite amusing to me! He said same is true for angle bisectors and medians. You can learn more such interesting things about Geometry, Algebra, Number Theory and Combinatorics, in our classes for Regional Mathematics Olympiad in Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan.
That was my first meet with Prof. M. Prakash. That very evening I joined the classes in Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan, and my visits to this Maths institute continued for next two years.
I learnt lot of interesting Maths from Prakash Sir. After his MSc in Maths from IIT Kanpur, he has been teaching Olympiad Maths to all young students. Several of his students went on to win Gold Medals in International Mathematical Olympiads!
He tought us so many techniques of problem solving, and one day he said to me,"Abhay, mind works faster than hand." And he showed a way to find a solution by just thinking, rather than doing elaborate analysis.
I was selected in Regional Maths Olympiad and then joined the classes with Prakash Sir for Indian National Maths Olympiad. It was an amazing two month training that I underwent. A box of unknown things was opened. Unimaginable things were revealed and understood.
I expressed my interest in pursuing Physics to Prakash Sir. He immediately recommended me Feynman Lecture Series.
He opened a door for amazingly incredible thing called Science to me!

Doctors are Angels!

God sent them on earth to remove all pain...! You just think of them, and sometimes the disease goes away... And if things go worse, just visit them, and they have a specialised skill to simply heal you...!
I had few minor operations in childhood. A gentle caring voice and a swift skillful surgeon:- made my body from hell to heaven!
I had a cavity in my teeth, and food used to get stuck, and it would pain. But I was bit fearful of an injection in the teeth base, so I kept postponing the treatment. One day it grew so much, I couldn't bear it at all.. I took help of the rescue team : Dentist Hema, Supriya and their friend ! A small injection which didn't hurt at all and a 10 min surgery procedure... Rootcanal was over and out! Pain was nowhere to be found. Subsequent days I was totally relieved of any teeth problems whatsover!
One day during driving on two wheeler something went into my right eye. I saw myself in mirror, showed my eye to my friends... The eye was normal when open, and it would pain when closed... two nights I postponed. Then Dr. Preethi in Devi Eye Hospital viewed it under microscope, and noticed a white foreign body below my eyelid. In a gentle flash of cotton she removed it! All pain was gone again!
The technology is also so advanced now... When I underwent the Root Canal treatment, the Surgeon had the finest rotating drillbits. When I tested my eye, the doctor had a well positioned microscope, a well positioned torch, and when I couldn't tolerate the twisting of eyelid-to check if something was beneath it- she even put a few anasthetic drops in the eye!
I like to combine Naturopathy and Allopathy for my health. Ayurveda is my favourite for Natural health. It heals the body from the root cause of disease- so that the disease doesn't take bigger form. Simple medicines, few simple techniques of Ayurveda have brought so much comfort in my life.
Ayurvedic doctors are like magicians... you don't have to tell them what is your health concern! They will tell you your medical history! Just by checking your pulse for few seconds...! Its simply amazing.
